Inside Désir: Working with Luxury Erotic Lifestyle Products

Erotic lifestyle products are mysterious, risqué and most men secretly own at least one. But what’s it like working for a company like Désir? Today’s post takes you behind the veil.

It’s safe to say that start-up culture is alive and well in South Africa, and loads of people are desperate to get in on the ground floor of a company that may change their industry forever. What happens when that company has a major shift to execute – from a nearly exclusively negative light to something entirely different? This is what Désir hoped to achieve on opening over a year ago.

Désir stepped into an online arena brimming with bad practices, bad press and stigmas that limited our growth from the day we opened. Working became a challenge inside a challenge, where we not only had to get the company off the ground, but change people’s minds about the industry we were in. This series helps you, our readers; understand who we are and what we fight for every day.

That’s why in this revealing post, we introduce you to one of our employees and the positive experiences and stories that have resulted from working with erotic lifestyle products.

Getting a Job at Désir: The Sex Toy Business

I knew two things going into my job search a year ago – I wanted to find a company that was going to contribute positively to the world, and I wanted to get in on a start-up so that I had a shot at shaping company culture. Erotic lifestyle products were not something I knew much about, but being an open minded guy when my talent agent approached me I took the offer seriously.

Looking into Désir and the designer sex toys market, I was struck on a personal level by the mission that they intended to carry out. Most of the other online brands in the space were perpetrating the very things that kept the average person from even considering a sex toy as something that could improve their lives. The industry had a ton of room for improvement.

Here was a start-up that sold erotic lifestyle products in a highly competitive space, but wanted to do it differently and better than everyone else. The brand was dead-set on not only becoming the best and biggest e-commerce retailer in the space, but wanted to do it while actively improving the sexual health and wellness of the people in South Africa. It was an easy choice for me, really.

The Unique Benefits of Working for Désir

I knew I had made the right decision from day 1. After the initial awkwardness of the products wore off, I started to see their real value. Erotic toys had come a long way in a very short space of time, and with technology behind them they really were changing lives.

These erotic lifestyle products exposed me to a wide range of very real problems and concerns that people were having in their daily lives. Sex and intimacy is such a big part of any relationship and sexual health is something that people tend to shy away from, to their own detriment.

I quickly found a sense of fulfilment in being able to help customers who would otherwise have had to suffer and struggle without access to our adult toy products online. I had flexible hours, was working with a motivated team with a clear set of goals – and I was given staff discounts which was awesome once I had rid myself of the stigma and my own preconceived notions about the toys.

Best of all, the more work we did the faster we grew!

Interesting Experiences When Working at Désir

My average day working with erotic lifestyle products begins as anyone’s day would. I go to gym in the mornings, then arrive at the office in Camps Bay 10 minutes before my day is set to begin. The office is open so there is ongoing communication about all projects that are currently running. I make some coffee, and I get to work!

From time to time customers drop by to check out our show room items. It’s all very normal – but this in itself has caused some challenges for me. Because I work with erotic lifestyle products that have explicit titles, I have acclimatized to the sexual terminology and don’t think anything of it. Until I mistakenly use it outside of work and realise the impact!

Designer sex toys like cock-rings and vibrating dildos still shock some people if you bring them up in casual conversion. For the most part, my friends and family just laugh when I slip up because they know I believe in what I do and support me.

When I tell new people what I do, I get mixed reactions until I explain the reality. Erotic lifestyle products can and do make some people feel awkward, and that’s okay. But I tend to see this as an opportunity to dispel the stigma, and go about explaining how things are changing in the industry. Désir doesn’t sell sex, we sell accompaniments to sexual health and intimacy – which is different.

A Company Culture You Can Believe In

At Désir, a big part of our company culture is to constantly challenge the misconceptions people have about high-end sex toys and the industry in general. Yes, sexuality is a private thing – but it shouldn’t be a repressed thing!

Unfortunately a lot of people associate erotic lifestyle products with the porn industry. When they think of dildos and vibrators, they only see graphic sexual acts. They don’t see them as sexual health products that can save a relationship, or a marriage and bring about real intimacy for a couple in love. Sex is a big part of people’s lives and that needs to be acknowledged by everyone.

The weirdest thing I’ve ever had to do is test a few erotic lifestyle products, so that reviews could be created about them for customers. When I started thinking of them as products being reviewed for performance as a customer service, and not to arouse readers, a lot of the weird went away.

What is it like working for a sex toy company? Working at Désir has been an amazing experience. We are really trailblazing in the South African adult space, attracting and helping couples find the intimacy they thought they had lost forever, without any of the porn-related smut.

On the whole, I get to come into work every day and figure out how to sell more erotic lifestyle products to people that will make their lives better. It’s an extraordinary brand working for a mission that is worth my time and more!
